BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — The LSU Museum of Art (LSUMOA) is among the first museums in the nation to earn certification from the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries (AAMG), recognizing the museum's commitment to excellence as an academic museum serving Louisiana State University and the broader community.
The certification complements the museum's accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums and affirms LSUMOA's dedication to nationally recognized standards in governance, collections stewardship, education, accessibility, strategic planning and community engagement.
The Association of Academic Museums and Galleries is the leading professional organization dedicated to academic museums, galleries and collections in higher education. Through professional development, advocacy and the promotion of best practices, AAMG supports institutions that advance teaching, research and public engagement through the arts.
By earning AAMG certification, the LSU Museum of Art joins a distinguished network of academic museums committed to professional excellence. AAMG member institutions include the Yale University Art Gallery, Harvard Art Museums, Princeton University Art Museum, the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University, the University of Mississippi Museum and the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami.
As LSU's art museum, LSUMOA partners with faculty across disciplines to bring original works of art into the classroom through object-based learning. Customized class visits, gallery discussions, and interdisciplinary collaborations help students strengthen visual literacy, critical thinking and analytical skills through direct engagement with works of art. These educational opportunities continue to expand through support from Art Bridges, including new learning, wellness and community engagement initiatives launching during the 2026–27 academic year.
The museum will also be participating in the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and Art Bridges Foundation's 50 for 50 initiative. As the only museum representing Louisiana, LSUMOA is one of 51 insitutions nationwide selected to receive a multi-year loan from the Smithsonian's national collection in celebration of the United States' 250th anniversary.
Faculty interested in collection research, class visits, customized learning experiences or object-based teaching opportunities are encouraged to contact the LSU Museum of Art at artmuseum@lsu.edu.
