Rules in school can sometimes be a drag—like why can’t I give Derrick a haircut without his permission. But sometimes rules in art can create pretty cool things. Right now we all have a lot on our minds, so let’s take some of the stress of thinking out in art-making. This is a great project with limited supplies to entertain kids and could also teach probabilities (the probability of rolling a six is 1/6), but could also be a fun activity for an adult zoom happy hour to make some quarantine art in solidarity.
Supplies:
Graph paper or paper to make your own
Crayons, markers , colored pencils, etc— use what you have
Dice—pull some from a board game, make one or use a ‘roll dice’ app on your phone
Steps:
Grab a sheet of graph paper or if you don’t have any on hand, make your own. Don’t worry about it being perfect— a little wonkiness will make your finished drawing interesting. If you are making your own grid, experiment with the color of the lines.
Pick a color to start with and roll your die (physically or virtually). For instance, if I rolled a 4 and a 2, I would count four across and two down and color in the rectangle with one color.
Continue to roll the dice and color in the shapes. You don’t need to stay in one area—Think about where that shape could be located that would be interesting.
For adults looking to change up your zoom happy hours, have each person take turns rolling the dice. Everyone will approach color, location, and orientation differently, so even if you are all following the same rules, your art will be different.
