Stories in Art : Check out these Books!

The museum is opening this Wednesday and now that you are able to visit, we wanted to share some ways to explore the museum. But before we get into that, here are some things to remember:

  • Wear a mask! It protects both you and others. While you are masked up at the museum, take a look in the family gallery and the What We Wear exhibit and find some examples of masks in the art work.

  • Social Distance! Help your parents follow directions by keeping a look out for arrows and signs that let you know where you should go in the museum.

  • Zip and Flip! Let’s make sure we keep our voices down so others can enjoy the museum and our hands to ourselves—keep you hands in your pockets to avoid touching things.

If you can’t get to the museum, no worries. Hop online and visit our website—We have artwork that you can look at right from your sofa. Want something more? Check out some of these books while looking at the artwork—What is similar? What is different?

Follow along with Simone’s adventure in Simone Visits the Museum when you head downtown to the LSU Museum of Art—is there anything that is similar to your visit?

Do you collect anything? Bugs, seashells, or feathers? Find out what Hector collects in the book Hector the Collector and then check out the exhibit Living with Art: Selections from Baton Rouge Collections. People like to collect all sorts of different art and objects—What would you collect?

Learn about Chinese traditions and stories with A Big Mooncake For Little Star and check out the intricate jade carvings at the museum. What stories can you find in the detailed statues?

Are you ready for a haircut? Let’s take a look at the book Crown and think about how a new haircut makes you feel. When you go through the museum, try to find the silliest hairstyles—Would you rock a hairstyle from our Portrait Gallery?

Being inside we’ve had to use our imagination a lot. Let’s read Julian is a Mermaid and see how he used his imagination to transform himself into a mermaid. Visit our galleries to find inspiration for your own make believe costumes.
